“Generational Curses”
“Generational Trauma”
“Becoming Transitional Characters…”
We have many terms to describe the pain, destructive habits, and countless examples of individuals turning things around in their life and thus transforming the direction their surname is headed. Still, awareness of the poor creating poor, violent creating violent, and detached raising the detached people are finding themselves trapped in a cycle of history repeating itself in ways that impact their personal growth, relationships, and overall well-being.
These negative patterns are often passed down from parent to child, acting as invisible shackles that restrict individuals and families from reaching their full potential.
However, with determination and conscious effort, one can break free from these destructive cycles and create a better future for themselves and their children.
Breaking The Curse: The Journey to Freedom
When we speak of breaking generational curses, we refer to the idea of transcending detrimental behaviors, beliefs, and habits that have plagued our families for years. These curses can manifest in various ways, such as financial hardship, substance abuse, emotional trauma, or toxic relationships. It takes courage and an unwavering commitment to embark on the journey of breaking these deeply ingrained negative patterns.
However, the rewards for doing so are immeasurable.
The first step toward breaking generational curses is delving deep into your family's history. It is essential to identify the patterns, behaviors, and experiences that have been passed down from one generation to another. By understanding the roots of the curse, we gain valuable insights into our family's dynamics and empower ourselves to make intentional changes. Here, we also find ways to understand our parents, grandparents, and those who’ve perpetuated the struggle, kicking the can down to the next generation to deal with instead of handling it themselves.
I won’t go so far as to say this understanding will lead to forgiveness or even acceptance; I’ll just say that understanding how a person could do what they did is enough to lift some of the weight off your soul.
“Generational curses thrive in environments where silence and secrecy reign.”
- Zac Small
By fostering open and honest communication, we can create a safe space for family members to share their experiences, vulnerabilities, and fears. Breaking the silence gives everyone a chance to heal and work towards creating a healthier family dynamic. In my life, there have been very critical emails, phone calls, and “dinner table talks” that brought some heavy shit from the shadows to the light, and it was in the act of bringing the secret to the forefront that allowed it to be discussed, and finally put to bed for good.
Addressing generational curses requires an acknowledgment that we can't do it alone. Seeking professional help, such as therapy and counseling, can be a transformative step in the process. Trained professionals provide guidance, support, and techniques to help individuals break free from self-destructive behaviors and instill healthier habits. This isn’t the path for everyone, and I feel obligated to include this point as it is not the path I took to address the (unfortunately) many traumas I have had to handle.
I faced my past issues with my wife, some friends, surprisingly, my kids, and ultimately myself. An example of this was my alcoholism, which I have covered extensively inside and outside of this platform.
I did not use any of the following:
AA
Rehab
12 Steps
Find God
End up in jail cell and hit rock bottom after hearing a judge’s gavel
I quit alone, without anyone or anything there to prompt me outside of my mind.
Breaking generational curses demands a shift in mindset and belief systems. It requires challenging long-held beliefs that have perpetuated negative cycles. By adopting positive thoughts and embracing personal growth, we pave the way for a brighter future for ourselves and our children.
