You need to get outside more.
If you roll in the parts of the internet that I do, you hear this daily. If you don’t share the same electronic stomping grounds, then this will sound like something you think kids need to hear, not adults - which is so, so wrong.
As human beings, more often than not, what’s good for our children is good for us; things like play, being active, and getting outside… These aren’t things we were meant to stop doing, you don’t “outgrow” your base needs in life, and one of the greatest shifts from children to adults is the levels of physical activity and exposure to the sun. Adults and children alike do not get enough sunlight; kids are inside frequently thanks to the entertainment offered by video games, screens on TV, Laptops, and Cell Phones, whereas in the past, there was less to do inside than out.
My friend Jack Donovan coined a term I dig, it’s “Stay Solar” and while his message is not based upon my angle here of “get more sun”, if you read the piece, it may get you outside more for reasons beyond a tan and some Vitamin D, read “Stay Solar” and let me know what you think below, the piece is solid.
The thing about this is I’m not suggesting you treat getting outside like a chore; in fact, I’d prefer you view sunlight as a positive and enjoyable experience that you work your life around vs. trying to work around your life. The average person, both adult and student-child alike, goes from:
Climate-controlled homes to
Climate-controlled cars to
Climate-controlled buildings to
Climate-controlled cars back to
Climate-controlled homes…
We’ve removed ourselves from nature and placed ourselves into a sterile, “always comfortable” environment, and the result is literal mental, physical, and spiritual weakness. I’ve never been one to preach “grounding” meaning the barefoot connection to the Earth, but as I write this, I believe that’s exactly the return we need - a mass exodus from the modern jungle and return to our roots, the land where literal roots are taking hold.
