The ’80s were filled with incredible movies and quotes; one which has withstood the test of time is “Goonies never say die”.
This quote, spoken by Mikey (Sean Astin), is a reminder that no matter what, you have a chance; you may be broken or defeated temporarily - still, there’s always a chance that a miracle can be pulled off and victory can be had, so don’t accept defeat or ever allow it all to be over - keep fighting.
What would happen if you went all in on something in your life or, as would be even more impactful (and equally terrifying), what if you went all in on life itself?
What if, for once, you decided that you weren’t going to give yourself an out, and your commitment to working out and eating right wasn’t going to come with the knowledge that you were going to give it up 2 weeks in; or worse yet, that you breaking from addiction, overcoming past traumas, or choosing to pursue a goal was a challenge you were to take on without any liferaft or option of quitting.
Think of it like this, what if you approached your desires with the knowledge that if you were to quit, someone you love would die or your home would be taken from you - would you give more effort then?
That’s the mindset needed in everything that you do.
Most people have way more effort than they show, and you need to approach each day with that effort like it is life or death; you need to put more than the briefest of effort and commitment into your daily targets.
If you want to connect with your kids, drop your bad habits, lose weight, or reach the milestones within your heart - you need to stop pussy-footing around an absolute commitment to that task.
It’s past time you started living as if your life depended upon it because it does.
Leave No Avenue for Retreat
In the year 1519, Hernán Cortés arrived in the New World with six hundred men; there, he took the Goonie’s advice, and upon arrival, he cemented his place in history by destroying his ships.
He didn’t destroy them because he thought he’d die or that he wanted to anger his men; he burnt them because he knew he was willing to die, and removing any chance at retreat sent a clear message to both himself and his men; there is no turning back.
It’s time to light the match.
It’s time to give all that you are to something greater than yourself - you’re giving up resistance to actualizing your potential.
You can change everything in and outside your heart, mind, and soul if you just flip the switch in your mind and change yourself forever. You are capable of:
Losing the excess weight and getting a body that allows you to go to the beach, in a public hot tub, or to wear shorts and a tank top without the ever-present insecurity of your weight or the blemishes you wish to hide from the world.
Adding muscle mass so you are no longer viewed as a twig men walk over and women walk by, instead becoming a solid, full-bodied man respected by peers and admired by women.
Making the money that can get you out of the rat race has made you stressed out and unable to live the type of life you’ve always dreamt of.
Getting rid of your addictions; I was a binge drinker from 13-33 years old; I’m (as of today, 12 Nov 2022) 2 Years, 4 Months, and 5 Days sober. No longer giving my time and money away to a drug (alcohol) that was destroying me.
Rebuilding bridges, connecting with your spouse, children, parents, extended family, or friends. Whatever happened has happened, but what is to come that’s up to you and how far you’re willing to go to treat the wounds and heal the pains once and for all.
It’s time to let go of your reservations of “What if?”; What if What exactly?
What if you fail?
You’re already living a life that is the product of a failure to fully commit.
What if it gets too hard?
There is no “too hard” when you’ve decided to go all in on yourself. The challenges and obstacles will grow, and so be it - Book A Call if you need a coach to check in with now and then to keep you focused on the plan.
What if people don’t support your changes?
Fuck them. Anyone with an issue with you working to be your best self is an asshole who wants you to do well, just not better than themselves, which is unacceptably selfish.
You see, there’s no excuse that can be given that I would ever accept as a justified reason for you to backtrack on your commitment to being your best self. You are meant for more than mediocrity; you were meant to believe you could do everything, and every self-doubt and insecurity picked up along the way was instilled in you by others.
Parents, teachers, pastors, “friends”, etc., have all installed pieces of themselves into you and taken pieces of yourself away. You were born believing in yourself, and it’s that childlike confidence I want you to find again…
You can do this; all that is required is that you give it one more shot, and this time, you take on your challenges with everything you have - no quit or regression, no false starts, and, all in all, the time for the rest of your days.
You can do this the moment you give yourself permission to believe that you can.
