It’s that time of year again – New Year’s Eve is here, which puts us on the threshold of being able to say, “I went the whole year doing X, Without Y, sticking to Z”.
Whatever mistakes you made this year, 2023 will purge them away as “that was last year” so let’s focus on the next.
It’s a time of fresh beginnings, a time to reflect on the year that has passed, and a time to look forward to the future. New Year’s Eve is an excellent opportunity to create new goals, plan, and get motivated for the year ahead.
If you want to make the most of this particular day, set yourself up for success by setting reasonable goals and creating a plan to make them happen. To get you started, I’ve listed 5 points that I’ve found essential for every goal I’ve set and attained.
Here are some tips to help you make the most of this special day and its potential.
The list below is to be used and abused by you; adapt it to your goals, insert more of what you need, and above all - write it down somewhere you can see, or else you’ll accidentally fall into old habits. If that happens, it’ll send your mind spiraling down the excused hole of, “I already fucked up, so what’s the point to keeping on going? The year is lost…”.
Spare yourself that fate by making your goals stand out daily; literally make sure they’re in your face from the moment you wake up until you call it quits. 2023 is an opportunity, don’t waste it.
1. Start With Self Reflection
Take time today to reflect on the past year and be honest with yourself.
What worked, what didn’t, and what do you need to change?
Write down your thoughts and feelings, so you can come back to them later and reflect on them.
2. Set SMART Goals
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Timely
Structuring goals is a great way to focus your energy and get yourself both motivated and in a position where you can assert discipline without breaking yourself.
Think about what you want to achieve in the coming year and how you can break it down into smaller, more achievable goals.

3. Make a Plan
Once you’ve set your goals, it’s time to create a plan to make them happen.
Make a list of tasks you need to do and break it down into manageable chunks. I go about this by using a whiteboard and Post-Its; I have my plan tracked in a way that acts as a web that bleeds one goal into the next.
Also, be sure to set deadlines for yourself and make sure you stick to them.
