Our lives are the consequence of every choice we’ve ever made, and if we are to take a moment to reflect upon all that we have been through, we’ll see that it is not the challenges that have been laid before us that drive the outcomes, but rather our responses to those challenges which have set the trajectory our lives have taken.

If we’re to become the person we believe we should have always been, living the “better life” we believe we deserve, then we must walk the path of that individual and step off the conveyor belt our current “self” is on.

We’ve chosen this timeline; if we want a different one, we need to live as a different person.

You Chose Your Journey

We are what we do, not what we want; ergo, a man who does not know what he desires will fall victim to the influence of those closest to him…

“If it is to be, it is up to me.” -William H. Johnsen

The stories below will highlight the importance of having a mission and vision, as a life without them is a life that is left to the whims of the wind.

A childhood with pain, heartache, betrayal, exposure to addiction, and losing a parent sets a kid up for many different paths regarding what kind of adult and parent they will be. Looking back on my life, I can only imagine how many timelines there are for how I could have turned out; given my past and the current trajectory, I’m one of the exceptions to the norm people would have taken.

I know I chose to make this timeline happen, but even with my vision and mission locked in, it wasn’t guaranteed until I was 33 years old and decided to get sober from alcohol - for good.

That’s a fucking crazy fact, but it’s real, and one thing I will always be with my readers is honest.

At 33, I committed to a path where at the time, I’d had a woman I’d been with for 17 years (married 12), and a 10-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter. My life was in full swing from the outside looking in, but within my heart, I knew it was all on unstable grounds as I’d not healed from the demons and traumas of my past.

What could have followed and what followed are nothing more than the results of the choices I made, choices made not because they were easy but because they were needed to get me where I wanted to go.
